We hold an annual Laurie Dale Memorial Field Trip, host the biennial James Jenkins Memorial Lecture, and present events as part of the Tuku Whakatu-Nelson Heritage Festival. Check here for details.

Projects, Prizes & Funds

  • The society was a key partner in the digitisation of the Nelson Photo News.
  • We continue to support the ongoing digitisation of the Nelson Evening Mail on Papers Past and have built up a fund to to help finance this.
  • The society is also building up a special publishing fund to assist local history publications.
  • The annual Jeff Newport Memorial Prize for secondary school student history essay competition is not currently being offered as we review the competition criteria.

    Nelson Historical Society Journal

    The society publishes an annual Journal of researched and written stories of historical interest from the Top of the South Island. The first issue was published in November 1955. This professionally produced publication is available to members through their annual subscription and is also for sale at various book stores around the region.
